This legendary documentary from 1965, directed by Frédéric Rossif and co-written by Rossif and Madeleine Chapsal
provides some of the mos effective documentary film footage about the War in Spain. Brilliantly narrated (in the English version) by John Gielgud and Irene Worth, this film was nominated for 2 Oscars and won the Prix Jean Vigo. Using painstakingly selected newsreel clips and still photos, Rossif thoroughly conveys the horror, disillusion and bravery of the Spanish Civil War. Rossif himself has said of this film: 'Fortunately, the truth of life is multi-coloured. The subtlety and contrasts of historical situations are such that history never resembles an ideology. things aren't only black and white.' More than most other cinematic depictions, To Die in Madrid manages to display, in Rossif's words, 'a glimmer of poetry that you can see only whenyou know how to grasp it at the right moment.'
We are very pleased to be able to offer the chance to see a film that is now, unfortunately, very difficult to get hold of.
